Do we really need a Federal Government?

Being that just over half the population voted in the last election, do we need parliament?

Or, if we do need one, since there are more provincial politicians than federal ones, why not get rid of the provinces / territories?

Or, given the emasculation of the Commons and the concentration of power in the office of the Prime MInister, re-set Confederation in a more republican fashion:

Head of state:
The Prime Minister (chosen by direct vote) who controls the Privy Counsel, the Prime MInister's Office, and a cabinet appointed from citizens (of means, of course) at large.

House of Federation (nee: Commons):
A small gang of provincial appointees given no real power but that of hamming it up in the foyer for the benefit of the folks at home.

House of Lords (nee: Senate):
Call a spade a spade. Appointed by the Prime Minister, the members of this august chamber would be select senior executives from Canada's most valuable and powerful corporations. They could be selected on the basis of stock value, strategic importance vis a vis international trade, or merely through the wisdom and insight of the Prime Minister.

No longer would we suffer under the chaos of an "excess of democracy".

All we've ever needed was a benign dictator.

Leave it the way it is and bring in a mandatory voting law like they have in Australia. Problem solved for the most part.

Cheers,
