Family Day Monday February 9th -TRANSIT SERVICE
February 04, 2015 09:23PM
Just a reminder, Monday February 9th is that new stat holiday Family Day and as such, there will not be an Express Bus operating and the island transit service will be operating on a weekend/holiday schedule.A special thanks to all who are making the Express Bus a rip roaring success with the 6:30 bus leaving Bowen the last couple of days with 40 riders Tuesday and 38 this morning. Thanks for the support. Will probably need some assistance in getting this service to be operated beyond May 5th as we approach Translink to integrate it into their service to provide a seamless service from Bowen to Downtown Vancouver and beyond.

It has been quite a struggle for you Peter and hopefully this current "trail" demonstrates to Translink that such a service should be permanent and they finally sees the light and implements a seamless service.

Peter, I personally see the only way a case can be made for your initiative to continue after May 5th, is if the BIM council did a presentation to the Mayor's Council at the Mayor's Council's next formal meeting.
The challenge of course is that you would actually need to work on getting your issue as an 'agenda' item, rather than a public comment. And present your case via email to the Mayor's ahead of time so they had the benefit to review the proposal rather than saying they need time to review it.
And the Mayors Council has no current meetings set for 2015, and their referendum priority will likely take most of their time.

As the TransLink answer is the following, the challenge is to counter the following premise from TransLink:

'TransLink does not currently have resources to provide any service expansion in the region'. (Received from Brian Mills, Director of Infrastructure for Translink in November 2014.)

Unfortunately, the current TransLink model of operations does not fit (see second to last page of this appendix ) with what you are proposing or what I advocated for in meeting with TransLink directors on October 31, 2014.

Peter, Sorry I forgot to add Translink's other comment of July 24, 2014 explained the need to consider cost-effectiveness in service design and that “A direct bus on a ferry would be inconsistent with nearly all of the design considerations outlined in the Managing the Transit Network Primer.” It also identified that a service of this nature had been proposed in the North Shore Area Transit Plan and was determined not to be an implementation priority for the same reasons.

Maybe a picture showing the " bus full" as it exits the 6:30 ferry would help. It is mind boggling to see the bus chugging up Gleneagles hill crammed with islanders, and contemplate it not matching Translink goals.

Walking from ferry terminus to bus 257 is their vision....nothing more as they are in the business of serving the urban core. End of story.
