Davies Orchard petition

Davies Orchard petition
November 06, 2017 02:41PM
This petition asks if we want Cottages or plinths. I presume a plinth would be used as the base for a future reproduction of the original cottage. Where construction funds would come from is not suggested.

I support the renovations for whatever stands now.

The word "plinth" has been removed from the recent (Nov8) staff report to the park cttee. but only the name - now a stone outline of the footprint of where a cottage used to be is called an "interpretive cottage feature". There are no plans, discussions, budget suggestions or interest in rebuilding once a cottage is demolished - GONE IS GONE! Indeed one cottage where money was spent to stabilize the roof and foundations is slated to be torn down. Although they call their proposal "heritage" the emphasis remains "open space" with 4 cottages demolished. There are some significant factual errors in the report, some skewing and misrepresentation of their own survey results, and very scant acknowledgement of local desire to save more of the cottages, share in fundraising and management and suggestions for many more uses that staff have found acceptable in other contexts but claim are not required or not appropriate for Davies Orchard (caretaker accomodation, artist studios or galleries, food services, nature house, storage). Cottage 10 and the demonstration garden are to be replaced with parking lots in areas which will be very difficult to access. There is support all round for more child friendly space but we are advocating that such facilities be indoor instead of outdoor or under canvas (year round vs. seasonal). whatever good ideas are here on bowen, Metro isn't listening and we are struggling with ways to get them to open this up. Although their plan is destructive, limited, unimaginative and short-sighted the price has increased dramatically and now stands at 2,149,000 with a $35000 annual operating expense. That operating amount is triple the budget of Bowen Heritage!

I think many of us are confused as to how we proceed with the restoration of this whole area.

Perhaps for Metro Parks this is just yet another Bowen irritant which might go-away after enough obfuscation.

It won't!

and thanks Maureen for the link.

Please see pages 25-57 of this report for Metro Parks’ proposed option for the Davies Orchard.

Edited to correct the link.
